Karen taught high school in the Langley School District for three decades before becoming Coordinator of Career Programs with the Vancouver School Board. For 25 years Karen has focussed on high school career education, with a priority on encouraging and supporting youth in trades.

In 2016 she tried her hand in trades learning via BCIT’s 4-month Women in Trades program, where she graduated “with distinction.” She finally got to use tools!

Karen received the 2009 BC Premier’s Award for Teaching Excellence in Career Education. She has been involved with SkillsBC, accompanying competitors to the National Competition as well as delivering SkillsBC’s “InSpire” program to promote careers in trades and technology to high school students. In November 2018 Karen was awarded a medal from SkillsBC for volunteer service to youth in trades.

She spent many summers as a sessional instructor in UBC’s Faculty of Education, teaching Health Education. More recently Karen worked as a Ministry of Education auditor in the K – 12 sector.

Travel and skiing rank high on her fun factor list.
